Today, January 23rd we commemorate that 50 years have passed since the beginning of the volcanic eruption in Vestmannaeyjar. Eldheimar has received for preservation a remarkable film that Ingvar Birgir Friðleifsson shot during the first days of the eruption. He was then studying for a PhD in geology at Oxford. The day after the eruption began, the director of the school's geology department invited him to go to Heimaey to film for the benefit of science. Attached is a summary of the film he made on this trip. Magnús R. Einarsson composed the music.
Ingvar Birgir worked almost all his time as the director of the Geothermal School of the United Nations University, where many hundreds of scientists from different countries have for many decades been trained in the use of geothermal energy for development in their home countries.
