ELDHEIMAR. - Winner of the Icelandic Design Award 2015!
The Eldheimar exhibition team is extremely proud and honoured to have received the most prestigious design award of Iceland, the Icelandic Design Award!
Launched in May 2014, the Eldheimar Volcano Museum is dedicated to one of Iceland’s biggest natural disasters, the Heimaey eruption in 1973. In the middle of the night on January 23, a volcanic fissure opened up on the outskirts of the town and continuously ejected lava and ash for five months.
Celebrating achievement and excellence, the Icelandic Design Award is given to a designer, a team, a studio or an architect for an outstanding new work, object, project or collection. The award is given to a recent project that demonstrates creative thinking, resourceful solutions, thorough presentation and professional methodology throughout the design process. Over 100 projects were nominated out of which Eldheimar was chosen to be the over all winner.
According to the jury: “The exhibition communicates a unique moment in the Icelandic natural history in an extraordinary way, using creative, well implemented and functional solutions with powerful aesthetics to interact with the visitors. The project is exceptionally ambitious. It is also a profoundly important, rare example of a cross-disciplinary collaboration between designers and architects.”
The Icelandic Design Award is established by the Iceland Design Centre in collaboration with the Iceland Academy of the Arts and the Museum of Design and Applied Art.
In the Eldheimar designer team are: Axel Hallkell Jóhannesson, Hringur Hafsteinsson Margrét Kristín Gunnarsdóttir, Lilja Kristin Ólafsdóttir.
